What a wake window actually measures
A wake window is the time between your baby waking from one sleep and falling asleep for the next one. Two details in that sentence do most of the work. The first is that the clock starts when her eyes open, not when you get her out of the crib — if she chatted to the ceiling for twenty minutes before you went in, those twenty minutes are part of the window. The second is that it ends when she is asleep, not when you put her down. If it reliably takes her fifteen minutes to drift off, you need to start the whole wind-down fifteen minutes before the window closes, which in practice means the number you plan around is shorter than the number on the chart.
Why bother with windows at all instead of a fixed schedule of 9:30am and 1:30pm? Because a fixed schedule is only right on the days that go according to plan, and those days are outnumbered. A baby who woke at 5:40am is a different baby from the one who woke at 7:15am, and telling both of them to nap at 9:30 guarantees one of them is overtired and the other is not tired at all. Windows travel with the day. They survive the 4am feed, the flight, the grandparents, the cold. Fixed clock times do not.
The awkward truth underneath all of this is that wake windows are popular guidance rather than a hard biological constant. Total sleep duration has a genuine evidence base — the AASM pediatric sleep duration consensus, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is the source for the 24-hour ranges this site uses. Wake window bands are a practical convention that pediatric hospitals and sleep educators publish because they work well enough for most babies, not a measurement anybody took in a lab. Anyone presenting them to two decimal places is overselling.

These are the numbers behind the tool, printed openly so you can check them against whatever else you are reading. Where sources disagree slightly — and they do — the ranges here sit in the middle of the commonly published spread.

Why the calculator stretches the day rather than repeating one number
Look at the output and you will notice the windows are not identical. The first one of the morning is the shortest, and each one after it is a little longer, with the final stretch before bed the longest of all. That is deliberate, and it reflects how sleep pressure works: your baby wakes in the morning with the least sleep debt she will carry all day, and it accumulates from there while her circadian drive pulls hardest toward sleep in the evening.
The practical consequence is the one most people get wrong. If bedtime is a fight — she goes down without complaint and then is standing up babbling at 9pm — the last wake window was probably too short, not too long. Parents almost always reach for an earlier bedtime in that situation, which makes it worse. Conversely, a baby who screams through the bedtime routine and then crashes hard is usually a baby whose last window ran long past the point of no return.
Reading the two failure modes
Nearly every nap problem in the first year is a version of the same question: was the window too short or too long? The signs look similar from a distance and completely different up close.
Too short looks like a baby who is cheerful, alert and entirely uninterested in the crib. She plays with her feet. She chats. Twenty-five minutes later you are still there, and when she finally sleeps it is a short, light nap that ends in a bad mood. Under-tired babies take a long time to fall asleep and then wake at the first sleep-cycle junction, usually around the 30 to 45 minute mark.
Too long looks like a baby who was fine and then, over roughly ninety seconds, was not. Sudden face-rubbing, a high-pitched cry, arching, and a total refusal to be put down. Overtired babies fight the crib hardest and also wake early from the nap, because the cortisol that carried them past the window is still circulating. Both failure modes produce a short nap, which is why the nap length alone tells you nothing — the behaviour on the way in is the tell.
When you are not sure which one you are looking at, adjust in one direction by 15 minutes and hold it for three days. Three days is long enough to see a pattern and short enough that you have not lost a week. Changing the window every single day in response to every single nap is the most common way parents end up convinced that nothing works.
The mid-day rebuild, and why nothing else does it
Here is a situation every parent recognises. It is 11:20am. The nap you planned for an hour lasted 28 minutes. The schedule you carefully worked out at 7am is now describing a day that no longer exists, and the next three decisions — when to try again, how long to let her sleep, what time bedtime should be — all depend on information the morning plan does not contain.
The “That nap was short” tab exists for exactly this moment. Give it the current time, the number of naps actually completed, and a rough total of minutes slept so far, and it rebuilds the remaining windows and bedtime from now rather than from this morning. It also carries the sleep already banked into its totals, so if the day is running badly short you will see a note saying so rather than a cheerful schedule pretending everything is fine.
Two rules of thumb worth knowing when you use it. First, after a very short nap, shorten the next wake window a little rather than lengthening it — a 30-minute nap does not reset sleep pressure the way a full cycle does. Second, when the day cannot be rescued, move bedtime earlier rather than adding a late catch-up nap. A nap that ends after about 4:30pm tends to steal from the night, and lost daytime sleep is more reliably repaid by an earlier bedtime. The calculator will already flag a bedtime that lands unusually early; that flag is information, not a scolding.
What this calculator cannot see
It cannot see your baby. That is not false modesty, it is the actual limitation, and it is worth being specific about what falls outside it. Teething, a cold, a growth spurt, a developmental leap, a house move, a new sibling, daylight saving, a room that is too bright at 5am, hunger, reflux, an ear infection — every one of these will wreck a schedule that is otherwise perfectly calculated, and none of them are inputs here.
It also cannot tell you whether something is medically wrong, and it is not trying to. If your baby is difficult to rouse, feeding poorly, not gaining weight, snoring heavily or pausing in her breathing, or if something simply feels off to you in a way you cannot articulate, that is a conversation with your pediatrician, not a scheduling problem. Parental instinct outperforms every chart on the internet and this one is no exception.
And finally, it will not tell you what to do about safe sleep. That is deliberate. How to actually use this without losing your mind
A schedule tool is only as good as the relationship you have with it. The parents who get the most out of wake windows treat them the way a cook treats a recipe timing: a strong default that you override the moment the thing in front of you says otherwise. The parents who struggle are usually the ones who have promoted the chart above the baby.
A workable rhythm looks like this. Run the calculator in the morning and glance at it. Set a quiet phone alarm for ten minutes before the first window closes, so the wind-down starts before the tired cues do. Watch her, not the clock, in that last ten minutes — if she is clearly done at minute 95 of a 110-minute window, she is done. Rebuild the day if a nap collapses. Print the card once a month or whenever the shape of the day genuinely changes, and let the fridge do the remembering. And when a day is a write-off, let it be a write-off: one bad day of sleep has never been the thing that determined how a baby sleeps.
Questions parents actually ask
What is a wake window?
A wake window is the stretch of time your baby can comfortably stay awake between one sleep and the next — measured from the moment their eyes open to the moment they fall asleep again, not the moment you put them down. It includes the feed, the play, the diaper change, and the fifteen minutes of patting. Wake windows grow as babies mature: a newborn may only manage 35 to 60 minutes, while a 12-month-old often handles three to four hours. Using the window rather than a fixed clock time is what keeps a schedule working through growth spurts, travel, and the days that go sideways.
Is this wake window calculator accurate for my baby?
It is accurate to the published guidance, which is not the same as accurate to your specific baby. The ranges come from pediatric sources including the AASM pediatric sleep duration consensus and commonly published age-band charts. Real babies scatter around those ranges: some 6-month-olds genuinely need 2 hours 15 minutes awake, others fall apart at 1 hour 45. Treat the output as a starting shape for the day and then adjust in 10 to 15 minute steps based on how your baby actually settles. If she takes 25 minutes to fall asleep, the window was probably too short.
Should I use age or corrected age for a premature baby?
Corrected age. Sleep development tracks gestational maturity, not the calendar, so a baby born six weeks early at four months old typically behaves closer to a 2.5-month-old for wake windows and nap counts. Toggle 'my baby was born early' under Customize and enter how many weeks early she arrived — the calculator subtracts that from her age before choosing a band. Most pediatric sources use corrected age for developmental milestones through around age two. Your pediatrician can tell you when to stop correcting for your child.
My baby's nap was only 25 minutes. Now what?
Switch to the 'That nap was short' tab. Enter the current time, how many naps have actually finished, and roughly how many minutes she has slept so far today, and the calculator rebuilds the remaining windows and bedtime from right now instead of from this morning. Short naps are extremely common between four and six months. The usual correction is not a longer next wake window but a slightly shorter one plus an earlier bedtime — lost daytime sleep is normally repaid at night, not later in the afternoon.
Why does the calculator make the last wake window the longest?
Because that is the pattern nearly every pediatric source describes. Sleep pressure builds through the day and the drive to sleep is strongest in the evening, so most babies tolerate — and actually need — a longer stretch awake before bed than they do after their morning nap. If the last window is too short, you get a baby who goes down easily and then throws a party at 10pm. The calculator lengthens the windows gradually across the day and adds roughly 10 percent to the final one for babies over six months.
What time should bedtime be?
The calculator derives bedtime from the last nap rather than fixing it, which is why the answer moves day to day. Most babies between four and 12 months land somewhere between 6:30 and 8:00 PM. If your result lands past 8:30 PM you will see a note — that usually means the last nap ran too late, and capping it is more effective than pushing bedtime later. A result before 5:30 PM almost always signals a badly short nap day, and an early bedtime is a perfectly reasonable response to it.
Do I have to follow the nap count it suggests?
No. The suggested count comes from the published range for the age band, but plenty of babies sit outside it — a 7-month-old on two naps is common, and so is a 7-month-old still on three. Open Customize and set the count yourself. If you are choosing between two counts, the useful question is not which is 'correct' but which one lets you reach a bedtime you can live with without an overtired meltdown at 5pm.
Can I print the schedule for daycare or a grandparent?
Yes, and this was the whole reason the print card exists. Press 'Print the schedule card' and you get a one-page card with the age, every nap and wake window in clock times, target bedtime, the date it was generated, and a plain-language note that these are estimates rather than rules. Choose your printer for the fridge, or 'Save as PDF' in the print dialog to text it to whoever has your baby that day. No email address required, nothing stored.
Does the calculator store any of our information?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type — your baby's age, wake time, or nap lengths — is sent to a server, saved to an account, or written to a database, because there is no account and no database. If you refresh the page the values reset. That also means we cannot restore a schedule for you, so print the card if you want to keep it.
