It is worth dismantling that before anything else, because if you believe it you will spend the next month adjusting a schedule that was never the problem, and you will get slightly more tired and slightly more discouraged with every adjustment.
Here is the direct answer, and then the reasoning behind it. The number is 2 to 2.5 hours awake between sleeps, or 120 to 150 minutes, measured from genuinely open eyes to genuinely asleep. Most babies this age are running three naps, and the stretch before bed is the longest of the day at roughly 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45.
But the number is probably not why you are here. You are here because the naps are short. The honest explanation is that a five-month-old's sleep cycle runs somewhere around 45 minutes, and a baby who wakes at the end of one has completed a full biological unit of sleep rather than failing at a longer one. She surfaced at a seam. Every sleeper has those seams, adults included — the difference is that you cross yours without ever waking enough to form a memory of it, and she has not learned that trick yet. It is a skill with its own timetable, and it does not arrive because someone shaved ten minutes off a wake window.

Why does she wake up at almost exactly 45 minutes?
Because that is roughly how long one of her sleep cycles lasts, and at the end of it she rises close to the surface by design.
Sleep is not a single flat state. It moves through stages, cycling from light into deep and back out again, and at the top of every cycle there is a brief stretch where the sleeper sits close to waking. The Cleveland Clinic's overview of sleep basics describes this architecture in adults, where one full cycle runs closer to 90 minutes. Infant cycles are shorter and lighter, which is the entire story in one sentence: she reaches the surface roughly twice as often as you do, and she cannot yet cross without opening her eyes.
What makes daytime so much harder than nighttime is sleep pressure, and this is the piece that reframes everything else on this page. Sleep pressure is the accumulated drive to sleep that builds while she is awake and discharges while she sleeps. At bedtime she has been awake for two and a half hours on top of a whole day's accumulation, and that is more than enough fuel to carry her through cycle after cycle without surfacing. At nine in the morning, after a two-hour window, she has built roughly enough drive for exactly one cycle. When that cycle finishes, the tank is empty. Nothing is pushing her back under, so she wakes up and stays awake.
Which is why the most common five-month pattern looks contradictory and is in fact perfectly coherent:
- An eleven-hour night that everyone agrees is fine
- A first nap of about 45 minutes
- A second nap of about 45 minutes
- A third nap of 30 minutes, if it happens at all
- A parent convinced something must be broken, because the nights prove the baby can sleep
How long should the awake stretches actually be?
Two to two and a half hours, lengthening across the day rather than staying flat. Treating all the windows as interchangeable is one of the quieter ways a reasonable schedule goes wrong: the morning stretch and the pre-bedtime stretch are doing different jobs and want different lengths.
The morning window is the shortest because she wakes with the least accumulated pressure and the strongest circadian pull back toward sleep. The final window is the longest because it has to build enough drive to carry the first long block of the night, which is the most demanding sleep she will attempt all day. Get that last one wrong in either direction and it costs you the front half of the night — too short and she has not built enough pressure to stay under, too long and cortisol arrives and fragments things from the opposite side.
One measurement detail matters more than it sounds like it should. The window ends when she is asleep, not when you start the wind-down. If you intend two hours and then begin a fifteen-minute routine at the two-hour mark, you have actually run a window of two hours fifteen, and at this age fifteen minutes is enough to change how the nap goes. Everything inside the window counts: the feed, the diaper change, the stroller walk, the dim-room settling. That last one is the one people leave out of the arithmetic.
A workable set of intervals at five months:
- Wake-up to nap 1 — about 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes. The shortest window of the day.
- Nap 1 to nap 2 — about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 20.
- Nap 2 to nap 3 — about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30.
- Nap 3 to bedtime — about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45. The longest of the day, and the one that carries the night.
- After a short nap — subtract 15 to 25 minutes from whichever window comes next, because she has less in the tank than the schedule assumes.
Is a 45-minute nap actually a problem, or just a short nap?
Usually just a short nap. The number that determines whether a baby is getting enough sleep is the 24-hour total, not the length of any individual block inside it, and this is the single most useful reframe available at five months.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's pediatric sleep duration consensus recommends 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours, including naps, for infants aged 4 to 12 months. Run the arithmetic on a day made entirely of short naps. Three naps at 45 minutes each is 2 hours 15 minutes of daytime sleep. Add an eleven-hour night and the total is 13 hours 15 minutes — comfortably inside the recommended range with room on either side. That day, which feels like a slow-motion disaster while you are living it, is a perfectly adequate day.
So before troubleshooting anything, do the tally honestly. Not the schedule's version of the day, but what actually happened. A nap logged as 45 minutes that included eight minutes of chatting before she went under is a 37-minute nap, and three or four of those small errors across a week is enough to make a fine week look like a failing one. The same goes in the other direction: a night logged as eleven hours that contained a twenty-minute feed is still a good night, and does not need correcting.
Once you have the real total, the questions worth asking are not about nap length at all. If the answers below are reassuring and the pattern is stable rather than deteriorating, what you have is an inconvenience you are managing, not a problem you are failing to solve. That distinction is worth holding onto at two in the afternoon on a bad Tuesday. And if the picture includes falling totals, a mood that is getting worse week over week, or any change in feeding, weight gain, or alertness, that belongs with your pediatrician rather than with a stopwatch.
- Is the 24-hour total inside 12 to 16 hours?
- Is she feeding well and gaining along her own curve?
- Is she generally content between sleeps, rather than glassy and inconsolable by mid-afternoon?
- Is the pattern holding steady, or getting measurably worse week over week?
Undertired or overtired? The two short naps look nothing alike
This is the diagnostic that saves the most wasted weeks, because the two failures produce a similarly short nap and require opposite corrections. Shorten the window on an undertired baby and it gets worse. Lengthen it on an overtired baby and that gets worse too. You have to know which one you are looking at before you touch anything.
An undertired short nap means she went down without enough accumulated pressure to sustain sleep — the tank was not full when the lid closed. An overtired short nap means she went down well past the point where her body had started producing stress hormones to keep her going, and those hormones do not switch off politely at the cycle boundary. The two have completely different fingerprints, and the most reliable tells are the length of the settling and the mood on waking.
Read the settling first. A long, cheerful run-up to sleep means she was not ready. A fast, hard crash means she was overdue. Then read the wake-up. Undertired wakes up pleased with herself. Overtired wakes up wrecked and cannot be resettled. If you can only observe one thing on a chaotic day, observe the mood on waking — it is the cleaner signal.

What does a realistic three-nap day look like on the clock?
Before the times, the principle that makes them usable: read the intervals, not the clock. The window is the real unit and the clock is a convenience for grown-ups. Any published schedule assumes nothing goes wrong, and something will.
So when the first nap comes in at 35 minutes and the whole structure slides left by half an hour, do not hold the original clock times waiting for her to catch up. A baby who napped 35 minutes has less in the tank than one who napped 75, so the next window runs shorter — maybe 1 hour 50 rather than 2 hours 15. On a genuinely poor day the windows compress toward the bottom of the range all afternoon, and a fourth micro-nap in the car or the carrier around five o'clock is a legitimate tool for reaching bedtime intact rather than a lapse in discipline. The goal at 5pm is not a good nap. The goal is a baby who can still settle at seven.
With that said, here is one workable day, built backwards from two fixed points: a consistent morning wake time, which anchors everything downstream, and a bedtime with a long enough run-up to hold. Everything between them is allowed to move. Notice the asymmetry as you read it — the windows lengthen as the day goes on while the naps shorten. The morning nap has the best odds of running long, because pressure from the night has not fully dissipated and the circadian pull toward sleep is still relatively cooperative. By late afternoon both of those advantages are gone, which is why the third nap is so often a brief affair no matter how carefully it is timed. That nap is not really a rest. It is a bridge, and it does its job even when it is thirty-five minutes long.
- 6:40am — awake for the day. The anchor. A consistent wake time shapes the day more than a consistent bedtime does.
- 8:45am — nap 1 begins, after a window of about 2h05m. Best odds of linking two cycles; protect this one above the others.
- 9:30am to 10:15am — nap 1 ends. Anywhere in that range is normal. If it ends at 9:30, the day is not ruined — the next window just gets shorter.
- 12:30pm — nap 2 begins, after a window of about 2h15m. Second-best odds, and usually the second nap to start linking.
- 1:15pm to 1:50pm — nap 2 ends.
- 4:05pm — nap 3 begins, after a window of about 2h15m. Short by design.
- 4:40pm — nap 3 ends. Thirty-five minutes here is a success, not a shortfall.
- 7:00pm — asleep for the night, after a window of about 2h20m. Roughly 3 hours of day sleep and an eleven-and-a-half-hour night.
What actually lengthens a short nap, and what only looks like it does?
Start with the disappointing half, because it is longer and it is where most of the effort goes.
Shaving ten minutes off a window that was already inside the range does not work, and it is the most common thing people try. Extending the third nap does not work either; it mostly borrows against the night and costs you tomorrow. And the elaborate rescues — the drive around the block, the extra feed, the swap into a different room — characteristically work once and then never again, which is the signature of coincidence rather than cause. Four days of an unchanged routine will teach you more than four days of experiments, because you cannot read a system with a lag in it while you keep changing the inputs.
One more thing that is not a fix but is worth knowing. Five months sits just past the window in which the so-called four-month sleep regression — which is really a permanent maturation of sleep architecture, not a regression at all — has been reorganising how she sleeps. You are looking at the new baseline, and it does resolve — just not on a timetable anyone can promise you.
The interventions that do have a real mechanism behind them are fewer, and only one of them is about timing at all:
- Get the last window of the day right. Too short and she cannot sustain the first long block of night sleep; too long and cortisol fragments it from the other direction. This is the highest-leverage change available, and it acts on naps indirectly, by preventing the deficit that makes tomorrow worse than today.
- Make the room genuinely dark. Not dim — dark. A room you could comfortably read in is not dark enough for a baby surfacing at a cycle boundary. This will not manufacture a two-hour nap, but it moves a meaningful share of 35-minute naps into the 50-to-60 range, and it costs nothing to test.
- Leave a pause before you go in. A baby who stirs at the 40-minute mark is sometimes at a seam rather than genuinely awake, and walking in at the first sound converts a possible self-resettle into a guaranteed wake-up.
- Keep the pre-nap sequence identical every time. The AAP's guidance on getting your baby to sleep emphasises predictability over content — the same short sequence in the same room is a signal she can learn to read. A sleep sack was the one piece of equipment I actually used, mostly because it made the handoff into the crib unmistakable.
When do you stop fixing the nap and rebuild the day around it?
There is a point where continued optimising costs more than it returns, and recognising it is the hardest skill in this entire subject.
A reasonable threshold: if you have held the final window inside 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 45 for a full week, blacked the room out properly, stopped intervening at the 40-minute mark, and confirmed the 24-hour total sits inside the recommended range — and the naps are still landing at 45 minutes — stop. Some five-month-olds nap short for months regardless of what anyone does. A few never nap in long blocks at all and still hit entirely healthy 24-hour totals, which remains the number that actually matters.
Most of what is written about short naps is written as though there is a solution being withheld from you. Often there is not. There is a five-month-old with a 45-minute sleep cycle, a body of published guidance saying she is fine, and a stretch of months that ends on its own. Cycle-linking tends to show up on the first nap of the day before any other, and the three-nap day usually consolidates into two somewhere between six and nine months. - Plan for three naps and treat a fourth as available rather than shameful.
- Stop scheduling anything that matters in the half hour after a nap starts, because you genuinely do not know when it will end.
- Move the bulk of the day's activity into the morning, when her longest nap and her best mood are both most likely.
- Make an earlier bedtime the standing default on short-nap days — 6:30pm rather than 7:00pm — so today's deficit does not roll into tomorrow.
- Track the 24-hour total weekly instead of nap lengths daily. It is a calmer number and a more honest one.
